IRS EIN processing times

How Long Does It Take to Get an EIN?

EIN processing time depends primarily on how the application is submitted and whether the IRS can process it without additional questions. Online issuance can be immediate for eligible applicants, while fax and mail applications require IRS processing time.

EIN Processing Time at a Glance

There is no single processing time for every EIN application. The fastest method is the IRS online application, but eligibility restrictions mean many international founders cannot use it.

Fax and mail applications are processed separately by the IRS. The time required can also increase if information is missing, inconsistent, duplicated, or requires additional IRS review.

Important: processing time is controlled by the IRS. EIN-USA can prepare or transmit an application as part of the service you select, but we cannot accelerate the IRS, guarantee approval, or promise the date on which the IRS will assign an EIN.

IRS Online EIN — Potentially Immediate

For an applicant who qualifies to use the IRS online EIN application, the IRS states that the EIN can be issued immediately once the application information is validated.

However, this method is not available to every applicant. In particular, international applicants whose principal place of business is outside the United States or U.S. territories generally must use another application method.

If you are applying from abroad, see our EIN for Non-US Residents guide.

EIN by Fax — Generally About 4 Business Days

The IRS currently states that taxpayers can generally receive an EIN by fax within approximately four business days when the completed Form SS-4 is faxed to the appropriate number and a return fax number is provided.

This is an IRS estimate rather than a guaranteed deadline. Actual processing can vary, and an application that requires clarification may take longer.

Do not treat “4 business days” as a guaranteed delivery date. Weekends and federal holidays are not business days, and IRS processing circumstances can change.

EIN by Mail — Allow About 4 Weeks

The IRS currently advises applicants to allow approximately four weeks for EIN processing when Form SS-4 is submitted by mail.

Mail also involves physical delivery time before the IRS can process the application, so applicants should avoid waiting until immediately before a banking, tax or business deadline.

What About International Applicants?

International applicants often have a different experience because many cannot use the domestic online EIN application. Depending on current IRS procedures and the applicant's circumstances, international applicants may use fax, mail or the IRS international telephone procedure.

The submission method is only one part of the process. The Form SS-4 information still needs to correctly identify the entity and responsible party.

For applicants without a U.S. taxpayer identification number, see How to Get an EIN Without an SSN or ITIN.

What Can Delay an EIN Application?

Processing can take longer when the IRS cannot process the application as submitted. Common issues include:

  • Missing or inconsistent entity information.
  • A legal name that does not match the formation record.
  • Incorrect responsible-party information.
  • Incomplete address information.
  • Unclear entity or federal tax classification.
  • An unsigned or incomplete Form SS-4.
  • Duplicate EIN applications for the same entity.
  • IRS requests for clarification or additional information.
  • Incorrect or outdated submission details.

Should You Send Another SS-4 If the EIN Has Not Arrived?

Not automatically. Sending duplicate applications through multiple channels can create confusion and may result in more than one EIN being associated with the same entity.

Before submitting another Form SS-4, determine whether the original application is still within the normal processing window and whether follow-up with the IRS is more appropriate.

Does Completing Form SS-4 Correctly Matter for Speed?

Yes. A clean, internally consistent application is easier to process than one containing omissions or contradictions. That does not guarantee faster IRS processing, but it can reduce avoidable problems.

For an overview of the application itself, read Form SS-4 for International Applicants. Our detailed line-by-line instructions and completed foreign-owner example remain part of the paid EIN Guide.

Foreign-Owned LLC Processing

A foreign-owned U.S. LLC does not receive a special guaranteed EIN processing time simply because it is foreign-owned. The submission method and accuracy of the application remain important.

Foreign-owned entities can also have separate federal reporting obligations after the EIN is issued. See our EIN for a Foreign-Owned U.S. LLC guide.

How EIN-USA Helps

EIN Guide + IRS Fax — $12

For customers preparing their own application, the package includes our international founder Form SS-4 guide, a completed foreign-owner example, and one outgoing EIN-related IRS fax transmission.

Purchasing the service does not shorten the IRS processing period. The value of the service is guidance and transmission assistance—not a promise of expedited government processing.

Manual EIN Preparation — $49

For customers who prefer manual assistance, EIN-USA prepares Form SS-4 from the information supplied, reviews the document for visible omissions or inconsistencies, provides it for customer review and signature, and transmits the customer-approved document through the applicable workflow.

Need an EIN urgently? Do not rely on a private service promising guaranteed IRS approval in a fixed number of hours or days. If you qualify for the IRS online application, that is generally the fastest IRS method. Otherwise, plan around the IRS processing window for the method available to you.
